Hello Parents,

I pray you all are keeping well. I have been away really sick since Thursday morning. I am feeling better today and thank God for his continued healing. Please keep my family in your prayers as they also are still recovering.

Thank you for your diligence in daily health checks and keeping students who are under the weather away from class as recommended by BC CDC.

As a school, Highroad has linked with Compelling Love Ministries in Guatemala since 2014.  We have built classrooms in 4 villages.  If a village can provide a classroom then the government will provide a teacher in Guatemala.  The classrooms we have built have changed the futures of these villages and their kids. As the leaders of Compelling Love, Rocky and Karren Chupa work closely with a pastor in the village and this also brings an opportunity for spiritual impact.

For so many reasons it seemed clear that we couldn’t launch a mission trip this year.  We are praying that opportunity might be possible in 2023.  As a school we feel led to focus on something “outside of our community” and we are planning on building a schoolroom in Guatemala.  Looking beyond ourselves will help us to know that God is at work, that we are blessed and that we can still be a blessing.  This year’s village, Cerrania Los Mayas, has 45 families and 70 students whose present “school” is below.

We are having two pay-to-wear (minimum $2) casual days- Feb. 14th  and Apr. 13th for the whole school.  On both days there will be a hot lunch fundraiser with all profits going to the building fund.  Please note, too, that larger donations can go through City Life Church and receive a tax receipt.  The cost for a classroom to transform a village is about $7000.

Learning for students this week:

  • Math – Financial Literacy Unit: Dessert Food Truck Business
  • LA- Biography Text Structure; Novel study on Inference: The Secret Zoo; Class Read Aloud: Pay It Forward, Young Reader’s Version.
  • Science- Continuing our unit Mixtures and Solutions
  • French – Weather Bingo
  • Social Studies– Cocoa Child Labor and NGO’s and IGO’s
  • Art- Principle of art: Scale
  • Bible –  Hebrews 11 study

This Week:

Friday, February 4 – Knights day and BMV: Isaiah 43:18-19 (updated with the right book, my apologies)

Upcoming dates to note:

Friday, Feb. 11 – Report Cards sent home to parents

Monday, Feb. 14 – Pay To Wear Casual ($2 minimum) Valentine’s Colour Day in support of Love Guatemala

Friday, Feb. 18 – PD Day – NO school

Monday, Feb. 21 – Family Day – NO school

Hello Parents,

First, I just want to thank each family for the wonderful Christmas cards, conversations and gifts before Christmas break. It was so thoughtful and kind of you to think of me.

I pray you have had a great time celebrating Christmas and the New Year with your family.  My family and I celebrated Christmas with a waffle breakfast and reading the various accounts of Jesus birth. We spent New Year’s Eve recounting the blessings over the last year. We have a blessings jar in our house where we write out God’s blessings over the year, big or small.

Our classroom’s furnace suffered an issue and shut off, January 2 and our sinks and toilets froze. Thank God, Mr. Jackson happened to stop by, on his time off, to check. Miracle one of the year: a pipe could have burst due to the frozen state of our classroom but God protected our classroom and its resources. Our classroom is currently defrosting safely and slowly. So if we were at school, we would have had to locate to a different area, which would not have been a great start back. I am so thankful to God and trust God in His plan for this year and look for his provision, miracles and guidance.

Important reminders for this week:

Please refer to the emails from the school administration regarding our return to school plan. Please pray for our administration, janitors, community, and students as we prepare to return tomorrow morning and continue our learning journey in grade 5 & 6! We are in this together.

I will do my best to have a selection of online (Google Classroom) assignments and packet assignments so that students can oscillate from in-class learning to home learning if the need arises. Hopefully, we can avoid the need to do so!

Your student needs to have: (suggest students pack it in their backpack the night before so it is not forgotten)

  • clean mask to wear each day, if not exempt
  • water bottle
  • NO need for gym uniform for the month of January. We will not be changing or using the change rooms.
